The city of Utrecht wanted to expand the 30-year-old Vredenburg music centre into a "Music Palace". From the original building, there was a wish to maintain the grand concert hall, renowned for its design and acoustics. The construction of the new Catharijnesingel was a great opportunity for AHH to focus the new music centre in this direction and to make the terraces on the side of the new Catharijnesingel. TivoliVredenburg works as a catalyst in the newly developed station area. Considering the high-quality inner city area we have proposed to make the entire expedition underground. TivoliVredenburg is thé new cultural building for the city of Utrecht, but also for the Netherlands.

In addition to the existing large concert hall (1.700 people), TivoliVredenburg has a pop music hall (2.000 people) and furthermore halls for chamber music, jazz and a so-called crossover hall. This design came about by a partnership between AHH, NL Architects, Thijs Asselbergs architectuurcentrale and Jo Coenen & Co. The former Vredenburg was part of the shopping center Hoog Catharijne, the new TivoliVredenburg is a detached building, especially made for musicacle use.
