The history of AHH

Founded by Herman Hertzberger, AHH has a rich history dating back to 1958. As one of the most influential architects in the Netherlands, Hertzberger’s groundbreaking designs and ideas have not only shaped our firm but also left a lasting mark on architecture worldwide. His vision of spatial design as a tool to foster a sense of community and human interaction remains a significant source of inspiration for our work today.

Iconic designs for real people

Over the years, AHH has realized numerous iconic buildings, including the Centraal Beheer office in Apeldoorn and the Apollo Schools. These designs embody the conviction that architecture should be more than aesthetics - it should invite, challenge, and add meaning to the daily lives of its users.

A legacy as a foundation for the future

While AHH focuses on creating contemporary, unique, and forward-thinking designs, the principles introduced by Hertzberger remain a core part of our DNA. We build on this legacy by delivering complex, innovative projects that place the user and their needs at the center.

Herman Hertzberger: still active and engaged

At 92 years old, Herman Hertzberger remains closely connected to AHH. While he has eased into a slower pace, he continues to be actively involved with the firm. His focus is on projects where his earlier designs are given a new purpose, such as the adaptive reuse of the iconic Centraal Beheer building. Additionally, he remains dedicated to education, sharing his extensive experience and vision with the next generation of designers. His involvement is a source of inspiration for the entire team and underscores the enduring relevance of his philosophy in our work.
